ABSTRACT

This chapter lays out the key themes and terms the reader needs to know in order to grasp the relationship of modern science with major living religious traditions in the United States. It describes the intended use and audience for this book; working definitions of religion, science, and technology; the current approaches to the study of religion; three categories for how science and religion relate; and the present state of science. This chapter closes with some thoughts on why this topic of science and religion is vital.
