ABSTRACT

The voice of Buddhists on how to engage with science is prominent today. And given that Buddhists represent less than 1% of the US population, their influence on how to relate religion to science is outsized. This is particularly true of Buddhist modernism, which entails a minimalization of specific rituals and doctrine and often highlights mindfulness meditation. Of course, Buddhism is much more than mindfulness. The topics of meditation, the teaching of the “no soul” (or anatta or anatman), and a willingness to revise traditional Buddhist teaching all tend to make Buddhism compatible with science today.
