ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the three foci therapists take in single-session integrated cognitive behaviour therapy (SSI-CBT): a problem focus, a goal focus, and a solution focus. It examines the role of problem assessment and case formulation in SSI-CBT. SSI-CBT is best seen as a problem-focused, solution-focused and goal-focused approach to single-session therapy. It differs from single-session therapy based on solution-focused lines, for example, which tends to steer clients away from their problems and orients them instead towards solutions or preferred futures. When considering problems in SSI-CBT, practitioners should be mindful of the client-centred nature of the work. In response to questions about session goals in SSI-CBT, clients frequently say that they would like tools to deal with the problem, better understand the problem or look at things differently.
