ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the question of what are helpful client characteristics for single-session integrated cognitive behaviour therapy (SSI-CBT). The success of SSI-CBT depends on a good blend of what practitioners bring to the process as a therapist and what the client brings to the process. SSI-CBT can often be a much focused approach to helping clients achieve their goals in the shortest time possible. Most therapy involves the use of words. Because time is at a premium in SSI-CBT, both practitioners and their client need to work quite quickly to make the most of the time available to both of them. The helpful client characteristic reflects on personal view and personal preference to inject humour into the SSI-CBT process. Clients who relate to such media of expression tend to have a more emotionally impactful experience of SSI-CBT than those who do not relate as well and so may get more out of the process.
