ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses considers understanding the nominated problem, and discuss setting goals in general in single-session integrated cognitive behaviour therapy (SSI-CBT) and with respect to the nominated problem, in particular. Problem understanding includes relevant information about the problem placed at ‘A’ and ‘C’. The first is the situation in which the problem occurred, and the second is the aspect of the situation about which the person was most disturbed. In ongoing therapy, practitioners would deal with the meta-problem before the original problem only if its presence prevented the original problem from being tackled both inside and outside therapy and if the client could see the sense of doing so. In SSI-CBT, where time is at a premium, it should only be tackled, if it is, in fact, the client’s main problem.
