ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discussed the importance of the client applying their learning both inside and outside the session. In two-chair dialogue, the client switches between chairs in communicating with another person – the client plays both parts – or with another part of themselves. In a sense, the most critical part of the SSI-CBT process is one over which the people, as a therapist, have no control. From the perspective of CBT based on mindfulness and acceptance principles, the emphasis will be on helping the client act in value-based ways while acknowledging troublesome cognition and emotion without engaging with them or attempting to eliminate them.
