ABSTRACT

This chapter considers what is known as the suitability question for single-session integrated cognitive behaviour therapy. In a comprehensive review of client variables in therapy, A. C. Bohart and A. G. Wade note that what complicates the literature on so-called therapy ‘dropout’ is that we have no agreed definition of premature termination or what they term ‘early termination’. Therapists distinguish between clinically significant and non-clinically significant improvement, but clients tend not to make such a distinction for themselves. While clients may be satisfied with what therapists define as non-clinical improvement, they can even achieve clinically significant improvement quickly. Therapists have their views concerning client functioning and dysfunctioning and these views are coloured by professional knowledge.
