ABSTRACT

The issue of nuclear power has always been a controversial topic in relation to national interest and public safety. In recent years, public attention and heated discussion have arisen due to the impact of the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, the North Korean nuclear issue, and the mass incidents surrounding nuclear power generation in China. The question of how to report nuclear power problems and guide public opinion has become a challenge for the Chinese media, especially for national newspapers. This chapter uses frame analysis, taking the People’s Daily as a case study, to investigate three media platforms of the People's Daily Media Technology Co., Ltd.: The People’s Daily newspaper; the People’s Daily website; and People’s Daily Weibo. We analyze their reportage of nuclear power issues, in order to explore how national newspapers achieve communication in public discourse through multimedia convergence strategies.
