ABSTRACT

This chapter examines what an education that aims to mitigate against people’s cognitive biases and promote open-mindedness might look like. Thus, the main question that this chapter addresses is: how can educators counter the five risks brought about by the phenomenon of cancelling while assisting their students to become more open-minded? The chapter situates the intellectual virtue of open-mindedness in the context of the efforts to provide students with a robust civics education. I argue that given the current hyper-partisan climate and the filtered, technological world in which people inhabit in the United States, there is an urgent need to reimagine the role of a civics education curriculum at all levels of education. Special emphasis is placed on the need to focus on open-mindedness as an essential part of a robust civics education. After explaining the educational significance of open-mindedness, I attempt to illustrate what an approach that cultivates this intellectual virtue ought to include while providing several examples from different educational contexts.
