ABSTRACT

This chapter studies the behaviour of art prices in the cycle 1998–2018, a period in which asset prices (artwork, stocks, property, commodities, cryptocurrencies) followed pronounced cycles of boom and bust leading to the global financial crisis of 2008–2009 and its aftermath. The evolution of art prices during these cycles is compared also with the behaviour of stock market prices, gold prices, oil prices and bitcoin prices, taking as a background the sharp cycles of the 1930s and the 1970s.
