ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, Departure: Towards a Psychology of Travel, is an overview of the aims of a new departure in the study of human behaviour and experience. Defining a number of key terms, it gives an overview of distinctions and similarities between mobility, travel and tourism. It looks at the historical development of some of these terms, as well as the relationships between them. The chapter also makes a case for the emergence of a psychology of travel by providing an overview of the psychological factors which relate to travel and tourism. To conclude, there is a brief outline of each of the subsequent chapters in the book, indicating which psychological topics and approaches are to be covered in The Psychology of Travel.
