ABSTRACT

Chapter 2, Directions of travel: Cognition, wayfinding and how to avoid getting lost, explores ways in which travellers orientate themselves when arriving in a newly experienced place. The emphasis of the chapter is on arrival in and negotiation of new places, such as cities and novel landscapes. This will strike a chord with anyone who has felt disorientated when arriving somewhere for the first time. Arrival and wayfinding are cognitive, social and corporeal processes that involve the intellect, body, senses. They sometimes require the help and guidance of other people too. This chapter explores research into cognitive, sensorial and embodied approaches to arrival, wayfinding and cognitive mapping.
