ABSTRACT

This chapter revisits the different chapters of this book, drawing some links and connections. It argues that a closer look at Gimbutas’ persona, life, and work can encourage debate about many topics: gender in prehistory; the relationship between humanity and the environment; and about the progress narratives of Western civilization. Gimbutas can serve as a window to the complicated history of the twentieth century, a century of major advancements in science, the Cold War, the rising women’s movement, and of an overwhelming disappointment of the consequences of modernity, especially the environmental crisis. The book encourages us to rediscover Gimbutas as a thinker that can challenge existing dogmas and show potential pathways out of the complex problems of today.
