ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how to develop character descriptions with plans, checklists, tips and models. It illustrates how to revise characterisation in a first draft by using an investigative approach to develop the ‘show not tell’ technique from a telling sentence. It includes an example of how to use a photograph to build a picture of a scene. A model is included of an innovated character description using a well-known character from a text. It examines, using a first and revised draft, how to include a character’s feelings, action, speech and thoughts (FAST) to bring a scene to life.
