ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the five categories of touch and three phases of embodied therapeutic work used as the framework for the author’s model of embodied therapy. In this model, touch is classified on a continuum, moving from basic and more social forms of touch (e.g., handshakes) to complex forms of physical engagement that require additional study and clinical experience on the part of the clinician. The model provides the patient and therapist with a framework that can be used to assess what type of touch might best address the patient’s issues. This model is explored and referenced throughout the book.
