ABSTRACT

Pelias usurped the throne legitimately held by his stepbrother Aison in Iolcus in Thessaly; Jason was Aison’s son, and his mother, suspecting Pelias might kill Jason to prevent him from claiming the throne, had him brought up elsewhere. When Jason, now a grown man, returned to Iolcus, Pelias recognized him and persuaded him to attempt to recover the Golden Fleece in the possession of Aietes, king of Colchis (on the east coast of the Black Sea). He hoped that Jason would not return alive.
