ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the point of contact between Michelangelo’s commission for the Sistine Chapel ceiling and later secular interest in the ceiling. The program that was developed on the ceiling had an important focus on regeneratio (“renewal”), a word applied in Christian theology to indicate either baptism or apocalypse. This idea had a totally new interpretation when applied to the work of the artist.
