ABSTRACT

This chapter takes the readers through the criteria for choosing an appropriate test of significance for the data they have obtained and the effect they are investigating. Data analysis details should have been a part of your considerations when designing the study in the first place. However, it does happen that test selection is left until data are in. Whatever you do, don’t just steam ahead, not really understanding what you are doing with your data and therefore reporting gobbledygook; if in doubt, ask a tutor. The reason chi-square is also like a correlation is that the authors are often investigating whether one category of one variable is associated with one category of another.
