ABSTRACT

Socio-relational determinants of health, historical and contemporary societal systems, and power processes that create and maintain uneven landscapes of privilege and oppression shape our daily lives across intimate, local, national, global, and environmental contexts. This chapter highlights the connection between social equity, mental health, and relationship wellbeing, and why it is important to infuse diversity, equity and inclusion throughout family therapy theory and clinical practice. In fact, given the complexities of the societal systems in which families are embedded and their impact on individuals and relationships, equity-based practice is a practical matter; a core aspect of doing good therapy.
