ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews enduring family therapy concepts related to CBFT and illustrates how therapists can integrate principles of sociocultural attunement to shift into third order thinking and third order change. Socioculturally attuned cognitive behavioral family therapists name unjust societal schemas and cognitive distortions and help clients value what society may minimize or overlook. Therapists intervene by coaching clients to track and interrupt inequitable patterns, envision alternatives, and take transformative actions. The chapter concludes with a case example that demonstrates guidelines for socioculturally attuned cognitive behavioral family therapy.
