ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights enduring concepts and practices related to solution focused family therapy and offers guidelines for socioculturally attuned practice. Socioculturally attuned solution focused family therapy includes expanding sets of solutions beyond individuals and families to tap into collective historical and contemporary resistance and resilience. All family members are engaged in naming and voicing their experience in relation to societal systems and power dynamics to enhance the family's collective expertise of their own lives, each other's strengths, and solutions across contexts. Clients are invited to envision transformation and take steps toward identifying and amplifying strengths that support equitable relationships. The chapter concludes with a case illustration to demonstrate how to create third order change by integrating awareness of societal systems and attention to power into solution focused practice.
