ABSTRACT

This chapter describes key features of narrative family therapy (NFT) and an application of socioculturally attuned NFT that integrates societal systems and attention to power in ways that can enhance possibilities for third order change. This includes exploring the impact of dominant discourses on individual mental health and relational wellbeing as well as real, material consequences of societal systems that marginalize and oppress some to privilege others. Socioculturally attuned NFTs encourage just relationships by helping family members attune to and name problematic and oppressive societal and familial power dynamics. As family members discuss the effects of problematic societal discourses in their lives, the therapist ensures all perspectives, including the most marginalized, are valued in therapeutic conversations. Socioculturally attuned NFTs structure their inquiry to intervene in problematic or inequitable relationships, help families envision more just alternatives, and take steps toward transformative action to free themselves from uninvited or imposed socio-relational contracts. These guidelines are illustrated through a case example at the end of the chapter.
