ABSTRACT

Building upon the previous chapter, this chapter looks at the development of Japanese national identity. To do so, the chapter invites readers to consider what is understood by some of the key terms used in such discussions. Linking to this discussion and some of the points made in the previous chapter, the next section particularly looks at the role that the Japanese education system may have in developing a national identity. This section, however, also highlights a range of other issues relating to the apparent public display of nationalism. In the following section, the chapter discusses some of the territorial disputes that Japan is involved in and how Japan has come to develop a sophisticated military force despite the apparent restrictions of its constitution. The chapter concludes with a ‘Reflection’ section that asks you to consider some additional issues that relate to the topics that have been covered in the chapter.
