ABSTRACT

Multimodal composition is clearly defined and exemplified at the outset of the first chapter. Readers distinguish this form of composition from the use of written words alone, which is how we commonly define writing inside of our workshops. Here, readers learn that writing is spatial, aural, haptic, visual, and gestural as well. In addition to defining multimodal composition, this chapter also creates important context for how teachers might approach teaching it in their writing workshops.
