ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses pay and reward, a fraught area in colleges and universities, and a common problem area for management. In many ways, pay and reward both reflects the culture of an organisation and creates it. We discuss the Ulrich Business Partner model for HR departments and performance-related pay and incentives in education, the cause of much controversy recently in terms of vice-chancellor pay. The issue of education’s uniqueness is discussed, referencing scandals like the one in Roslyn School District in New York, the largest public school embezzlement in US history.
