ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses technical issues and definitions of duties and responsibilities, the ‘functions’ of a job and ‘job descriptions’ for salaried positions in schools and universities. It discusses the discretionary element of a ‘job’, central to the idea of job evaluation and responsibility analysis and determining appropriate reward and status for individuals, the subject of the previous chapter. The chapter distinguishes between ‘level’ and ‘quantity’ of work, ‘time-span of discretion’ as a measure of the value of that job to the organisation, and ‘range of level of work’. The chapter is designed to anchor the practice of reward management in solid theory.
