ABSTRACT

The three most common issues for management teams are competition, creating lean efficient organisations and rewarding staff. The last two are internal issues, whereas competition is externally facing. Various models of competition are discussed in this chapter: Porter’s Competitive Analysis model, which provides an insight into the dynamics of a sector or market; the Core Competence model, which describes the skills and abilities unique to an organisation and assessing them as an essential component of building strategy; and the Herfindahl Index as a measure of the extent of competition between organisations in a sector.
