This chapter covers some of the strengths, limitations, and challenges of procuring and working detection dogs. The basics of what makes up a detection canine team are covered along with the implications of using a human remains detector (HRD) canine in forensic cases. A basic review of case law, judicial rulings, and how HRD canines have been used (or misused) and potential implications are included in this chapter. The concept of best practices and standards are covered to help an HRD canine handler be best prepared to handle, deploy, and explain how their forensic tool works.
