ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights ten cases involving missing persons, either victims of accident, suicides, or homicides. Many of the cases include graphic crime scene photographs that focus on the influence of environmental factors and the taphonomic condition that the decedents were in. The effects of season (cold and warm) were included to demonstrate the effects on decomposition of people. Other cases involved the use of human remains detector (HRD) canines and how they were utilized in specific conditions on both land and water searches. These cases demonstrate the complex and challenging situations that HRD canine handlers and law enforcement personnel encounter when involved in missing person investigations.
