ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces different ways that technology could replace, protect, or augment human remains detector (HRD) canines during deployments. Focusing on technology that may help determine where or not to deploy an HRD canine is covered along with things that can be used to protect or enhance the dog during a search is included. The last part of the chapter includes a case study in which many different branches of forensic science were utilized. Incorporating biological scientists who specialized in soil, plants, and microscopic organisms obtained with what initially appeared to be routine evidence, site-specific information was used to help determine where the decedent could have been placed. Combining this information along with an HRD canine team yielded interesting results.
