ABSTRACT

The welfare of canines who participate in animal-assisted psychotherapy is increasingly recognized as a critical consideration of this field. Recent research, along with changing legislation is acknowledging the sentience of canines and other animals and beginning to consider their individual interests, choices, and even level of fulfillment. This chapter highlights the benefits for the dog that participates in treatment, as well as the potential risks. A detailed section on recognizing and interpreting the emotional and physical condition of the dog is also included.
