ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of the topics in this book and introduces the role that neurobiology plays in the life of a developing child. The consequences of maltreatment, trauma, and dysregulation can dramatically disrupt the normal developmental trajectory of the child. These changes are manifested in the functional domains of the individual, appearing as emotional and behavioral reactivity, distrust, hyperactivity, opposition and defiance, academic under-performance, and social and interpersonal difficulty.
