ABSTRACT

Humans and wolves, the ancestors of modern dogs, came together during the Ice Age and seeded a bond that has evolved over thousands of years into the uniquely attuned and synchronous relationship of today. This interspecies connection conferred significant changes in both species resulting in a convergence in genetics, neurobiology, anatomy, and even the gut. This shared history that is reflected in the mutuality seen today, is supported by recent paradigm-changing research that is putting science behind the capability of canine support in treatment. Some of the most exciting evidence from this early history shows that wolves and dogs may have played a role in shaping who we are today.
