ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the fourth category of Millennials, the nonreligious, are fast becoming the default option in many ways among the youngest living adult generation. This chapter demonstrates this notably through (non)religious switching and retention rates among Millennials: that disaffiliation rates from parents’ religion are especially high, and that retention rates of parents’ nonreligion are also very high … the highest they have ever been among any living generation. This chapter also examines the different forms this nonreligion can take among young adults.
