ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance of creating and maintaining organizational structures and processes that successfully deliver public goals and values. The chapter reviews various organizational theories that help us understand the role that individuals, teams, and the larger organization play in advancing the common good. We especially emphasize the importance of viewing organizations and their leaders as small “p” political agents responsible for building and preserving the wellbeing of a shared commonwealth. As part of this discussion, we explore the distinction between leadership and management, and the role of leaders in managing change in organizations.
