ABSTRACT

The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is not only the premier school of the Swedish economic elite; it is also the premier school for the Swedish economic elite. Indeed, there is a general belief that the SSE is an “elite university”; this is not only underpinned by statistics showing that a significant number of members of the Swedish economic power elite are graduates from the school but also through the way the school is branded. The hiring of large groups of students by the consulting and finance industries, which represent the most capitalist of all industries and that are critical players in the reproduction of neoliberalism, strongly contribute to the aura of elitism that is the hallmark of the school. In relation to this, the school, as a result of its male-coded culture that has been described in earlier chapters, and the character and profile of employers, contributes to constructing gender, where the male sex is the primary focus of its consecration.
