ABSTRACT

In the business world and in your personal life, you should buy drinks for others early and often. Buying a round comes in a number of different forms and fashions. The best way I can think of buying a round is to share your knowledge and experience with someone within your network or organization. There will be times when you want to share your experience with someone and buy them a drink, and they will have no interest in accepting it. This person may not be worth the time or effort, or you just need to push a little harder to get through to them or just wait. There will be certain individuals who will resist at first, but it will be worth your time to wait until they come back and ask for your advice. Either way, buying a drink can be the most fulfilling thing you can do for your mentee and yourself. I have had mentors give me “pearls” about themselves, but even more impactful have told me stories about people who were an influence on them. I had one manager tell me he had a colleague who would find “the one thing” that the customer really wanted and continue to focus on that until the deal was done. One of these pearls was the inspiration for this book. I have accepted the drinks that people have bought for me in my career and used their advice every day. Also, please don't forget to tip and tip well. The best tip I know of is sincere gratitude. There are some great ways to “tip” and say thank you that we will touch on later.
