ABSTRACT

The videogame industry is a dynamic, exciting world to be a part of. More than ever, there is an explosion in the demand for game developers of all disciplines, audio designers included. However, an ever-increasing number of students and aspiring professionals are competing for these jobs, and competition is fierce. One must have not only a great portfolio but also the skills necessary for networking and maintaining a social presence (which must at least include a website and a place to hear samples). Networking is not only about meeting new people but how you present yourself, and especially about being kind and respectful. There are all sorts of online and in-person places to meet including game jams, postmortems, events, talks, expos, and conventions. There are also many side skills to consider picking up along the way such as a bit of game design, scripting (or even programming), testing, writing, and at least a familiarity with game art and animation. Breaking into the world of professional game audio can be challenging, and a section of perseverance is also included. Lastly, a list of several relevant online resources is provided.
