ABSTRACT

Audio designers are not necessarily composers or musicians themselves; however, having a general understanding of music theory is of great benefit, as they can apply some recording and postproduction techniques in a musical way. For example, tuning user interface sound effects to a musical scale that is consonant with the background score. Topics include the Western 12-tone scale, including notes, accidentals and naturals, steps, and intervals. Notation is touched upon, outlining the grand staff, keys and key signatures, the circle of fifths, harmony and chords, as well as harmonics and overtones. Lastly, the concept of timing is introduced, covering beats, rhythm, tempo, and time signatures.
