ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the emergence of a new generation of blockchain-enabled impact business models. There has been a strong growth in the number of these crypto companies over the last years. Business models are being developed using a very wide set of tools available in the design space. These elements include total transparency, immutability of data, a high degree of trust in the open-source code, and the integration of economic incentives using cryptocurrencies. For example, the blockchain technology enables an algorithmically controlled disbursement of funds, and there are already some concepts which link the automatic disbursement to events or achieved milestones.

A special category is the decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) which represent a new form of organizational setup.

The chapter discusses some cases in more detail. The cases are related to supply chain, violence and war crimes, philanthropy, land rights, and the legal system.
