ABSTRACT

This chapter explores plant-based diets and how all dancers can benefit from reviewing the plant-based elements of their diets. The varying levels of plant-based diet that a dancer may follow are discussed, together with consideration and practical advice on managing intakes of nutrients that can be a challenge to consume in a progressively plant based diet. This chapter also reviews the area of sustainable eating, and what a sustainable diet might look like for a dancer. Current research surrounding organic food will also be debated and benefits and disadvantages of organic foods for dancers. The topic of phytonutrients is explored to highlight the specific benefits some plant-based foods provide over and above their content of macro and micronutrients.
