ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at fluid requirements and how dancers and performers can meet those requirements. It discusses how the dancer can optimise their fluid status before class, rehearsal or performance. The physiology of sweating, and how electrolytes are involved in the regulation of fluid balance will be considered. The impact of the duration and intensity of dance impacts on fluid losses are reviewed, as well as how individual variation and environmental conditions impact on this.

Dancers will be given information on timing and quantity of fluids and ways to check how hydrated they are. Fluid choices will be discussed. There are also tips on fluid intake around performances, exams and classes.
