ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the vast field of dietary supplements and ergogenic aids and how they may be of relevance to dancers. Readers will be guided in making informed decisions and made aware of the risks and contraindications in the field of dietary supplements and ergogenic aids. Information on managing nutritional deficiencies and the role of the specialist dietitian is highlighted. Drawing upon current research, a number of supplements and ergogenic aids are discussed, including omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics and other potentially performance enhancing products such as protein supplements, beta-alanine, creatine and carbohydrate supplements. The potential benefits associated with products are explored with reference to performance optimisation and overall well-being. High risk nutrients for dancers, including iron, calcium and vitamin D are discussed and recommendations made.
