ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the components of fitness for dancers and how these might link with body composition. The dancer’s relationships with their body and with food are considered. The changes that occur in body composition during the adolescent growth period are summarised. Techniques for measuring body composition are reviewed, including consideration of those with disability, and the pros and cons of body composition measurements are discussed. The challenges, risks and benefits of changing body composition, and the pressures dancers face to do this are explored. The science of altering body composition and developing sustainable habits are highlighted. Food choices to help sustain healthy body composition are also discussed.
