ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 on ‘The Granularity of Future War’ continues to explore the change in scale in technology, terrains and tactics. Exploring a variety of interventions and perspectives on urban warfare, the chapter explores the possibilities for the liberal way of warfare in terrains that might be increasingly transparent to various forms of surveillance and congested with different weapons, technologies and actors. Much of the discussion on the change of scale in the chapter has focused on liberal interventions in the Global South but the focus turns to great power conflict. While this focus on the granularity of conflict might seem to point to ‘small’ conflicts, technologies and actors, it is suggested that the granularity of future conflict might be central to great power conflict and competition.
