225As we considered in earlier chapters, businesses need to be innovative and nimble to respond to customer needs and succeed in the dynamic competitive environment. The pandemic and its consequences have accelerated underlying trends. Organisations and work therefore must be designed for agility and high performance. A new operating system for work is needed — one that better supports the high degree of organisational agility required to thrive amid increasingly rapid change and disruption, and that better reflects the fluidity of modern work and working arrangements (Jesuthasan and Boudreau 2018, 2021).
