ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces readers to the importance of creating support networks for themselves as they embark upon a career in translation, especially in the age of what Castells once famously called the ‘network society’ (1996). Discussing the impact of globalisation and automation on today’s translation production networks, this chapter shows the importance for starting translators to be in a position to access colleagues’ shared experiences and advice in order for them to fight isolation and improve as experts. It therefore discusses the potential benefits of belonging to a professional translator association and online communities such as TranslatorsCafé and ProZ.com, as these can help professional translators develop a sense of professional and social identity as well as acting as a marketplace and potentially guiding them through challenging legal and/or ethical situations. The final part of this chapter encourages readers to consider their own preferred socialising styles before they start creating their own, tailor-made support networks so they can make sure the professional networks they have in place match their needs and personalities as professional translators.
