ABSTRACT

Inspired by career coaching, this chapter helps aspiring translators go about finding their first job in the translation industry. The first part of this chapter explains why it is crucially important to research the job market long before applying for jobs. It therefore teaches readers to read the translation industry – both globally and locally – with their future job search firmly in mind. This leads to a discussion of what employers actually want when they advertise a role, especially in a market that has seen a huge proliferation and diversification of job titles in the last few years. There ensues a discussion of CVs and covering letters for professional translators, which highlights the need for readers to harness their existing translation skills by understanding the importance of always tailoring these partly informative, partly operative texts to the job at hand. Chapter 4 concludes with a discussion of the test translations professional translators are regularly asked to complete when looking for work.
