ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6, readers are introduced to the whole project management cycle from start to finish. It allows them to find out more about an increasingly important role in the translation industry: project manager (PM). Due to their strategic importance, this chapter puts particular emphasis on the first two steps of the pre-production phase: the feasibility study (what does the project consist of? What are the client’s expectations? Are the resources in place to deliver the project successfully?) and quoting clients. Concerning the latter, readers are encouraged to reflect on the impact not just of market rates and of their own overheads, but also of the quality-time-cost triangle, of the potential inclusion of non-standard components and the use of translation tools and technology on pricing. Chapter 6 then moves on to introduce readers to some key principles in launching, monitoring and closing translation projects. A checklist at the beginning of this chapter helps readers visualise each step involved in translation project management. Similarly, for each key phase, suggested activities based on simulated translation projects allow them to try their hand at translation project management.
