Introduction

This chapter introduces the origins of the cypherpunk movement and distinguishes the movement from hackers and cyberpunks. Cypherpunks are distinctive in their advocacy for the use of cryptography, and their primary slogan—privacy for the weak, transparency for the powerful—represents their desire to use encryption to shift the balance of power away from governments and corporations and toward individuals and publics.
